The Battle of Khasham:

in February 2018, a small contingent of American forces were deployed to Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve; an ongoing campaign against ISIS while supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces in the Syrian Civil War. The allied forces were protecting the Conoco natural gas Refinery in eastern Syria.

On February 7, 2018, a group of 500 pro-Syrian government forces, including members of the Russian backed Wagner mercenary group attacked the American and SDF position with tanks, armored personnel carriers, and artillery fire. For 15 minutes, the Americans held their fire while military officials in Washington called upon their Russian counterparts to call off the attack. The Russian government responded that they had “no Russian troops in the Area”.

Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, then ordered for the attacking force to be “annihilated“.

The Americans responded in kind over the next 45 minutes with MQ-9 Reaper Drones, F22 stealth fighter jets, F15E strike fighters, B-52 bombers, AC-130 gunships, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, and Marine artillery.

One Wagner group Survivor described it as “a F**king merry-go-round with heavy caliber, machine guns“. 9 of 10 Russian tanks were destroyed along with all six heavy artillery pieces. One American described the landscape following the battle as “Moon-like, not a single living organism survived in the targeted square mile”.

In the end, American officials contacted the Russians and “confirmed there are no Russian troops in the area, and they can take whatever is left from there“.
